Environmental Impact Assessment for the Proposed Exploration Portal Development and Decline at Nyabirama, North Mara Gold Mine – 2017

MTL Consulting has been contracted by North Mara Gold Mine Limited to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment for the Proposed Exploration Portal Development and Decline at Nyabirama in North Mara Gold Mine. The study involved preparation of the EIA proposal, development of a Project brief and Registration form which were submitted to NEMC for approval. We are currently waiting for the Project Registration approval.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the Proposed Imweru Gold Mine

MTL Consulting was contracted this year (2017) by Reef Miners Limited, a subsidiary company of KIBO Mining PLC to undertake an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the proposed Imweru gold Project in Chato District, Geita Region. Baseline studies including hydrology, hydrogeology, air quality, noise and vibration, biodiversity, soil, Health assessment, archaeology and stakeholders engagement have been conducted for the period of between 16th September 2017 and 24th September 2017. We are currently finalizing the scoping study and plans for second round study which will involve the water sampling and feedbacks to stakeholder proposed to commence on November 2017 for compilation of detailed EIS.

IIED

MTL Consulting was contracted in November 2016 by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) to undertake the Small Scale Mining research on Evidence to inform an ‘action dialogue’. The aim of the research was to Collect evidence and synthesize what is known about the ASM sector in Tanzania, Undertake stakeholder mapping and engagement and identify critical knowledge gaps that would constrain dialogue, Refine the research findings in order to produce a dialogue background paper that support forward-looking dialogue and Reflect and document national ASM multi-stakeholder dialogue outcome and ways forward.  The National dialogue will be conducted on 7th to 10th of November in Geita, and the final research report will be submitted to client in December.

Fair Trade

MTL consulting is currently conducting a three year program (Jan 2016 – Dec 2018) of Fair Trade of Building Resilient ASM Communities in East Africa.

The project supports artisanal and small scale miners in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda in adopting best practice in social and environmental standards and becoming Fairtrade certified. MTL Consulting Coordinating is managing the Fairtrade Gold project in Tanzania as a local Support Organization. MTL has been responsible for the day-to-day project coordination and implementation of the project activities in Tanzania. The Project activities included developing the Curriculum and conducting training in appropriate mineral production technologies; proper handling of hazardous chemicals; health and safety; environmental consideration in small scale mining; entrepreneurial and business skills development. Also MTL participates in Monitoring & Evaluation of all activities. This program will end up in Dec 2018.

TAWOMA

MTL Consulting was contracted in July 2017 with Tanzania Women Miners Association (TAWOMA) to conduct a research / study on formalisation of artisanal small-scale mining activities in Tanzania. The aim of this project is to review the Mineral Policy of 2009 and Mining Act 2010 and assess strengths, weaknesses, loopholes and propose amendments which will address constraints to the formalization of artisanal and small-scale mining sub-sector as a long term sustainable growing economic and formalised activity. The inception report already submitted to client, currently we are progressing with the consultations of key stakeholders and literature review. The final report will be submitted to client on Dec 2017.

Socio-ecological Assessment of the Green Economy in Biosphere reserves- 2017

MTL Consulting was contracted by UNESCO to conduct Socio-ecological assessment of green businesses in Tanga and Kilimanjaro regions with the emphasis on the evaluation of the impact of these Green Businesses to the Protection and Conservation of the Environment and enhancing socio-economic welfare of the beneficiaries.

The study involved preparation of proposal, reviewed the relevant Socio-ecological framework and the concept underlying the Green Economy and Biosphere Reserves in Tanzania and conducted the assessment in the two regions, analyses of primary and secondary data and development of Biodiversity Monitoring Report. The Socio-ecological assessment report was prepared, sent to client for review and feedback.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Proposed Nyanzaga Gold Mine 2016-2017

MTL Consulting was contracted in 2016 by OreCorp, to undertake an Environmental and Impact Assessment (EIA) with local and IFC Standards for the proposed Nyanzaga Gold Mine Project in Sengerema District, Mwanza Region. Baseline studies conducted included: Hydrology, Archaeology, Wetland Delineation, Hydrogeology, Soil, Air Quality, Noise and Vibration, Biodiversity, Soil, Health Impact Assessment, and stakeholders’ engagement. The studies were conducted in both dry and wet season. EIA report was submitted to NEMC for review and at the moment is at the finalization stage of incorporating comments from TAC.
